On the 12th Oct 2020, we launched Kotani Pay alongside our partners, Kotani Labs, at the launch of the UNODC East Africa Youth Blockchain Hackathon Launch.
We are excited to be growing out a solution that was birthed through innovation at a hackathon just like the one we had the pleasure of launching. Over the last few weeks, we have brought together elements supporting our financial solution including connection to banking systems and to our largest mobile money network, Safaricom. We now enable on-ramp and off-ramp into blockchain from traditional financial systems through a simple USSD solution that works even on feature phones.
In Africa, 440 Million out of the 770 Million registered mobile money users use feature phones. This is why our solution focuses on USSD technology, the predominant interface for phones on the continent. USSD solutions do not require internet connection yet offer connection to services on the blockchain.
Over the next couple of weeks, Kotani Pay shall be completing a pilot with close to 100 users in Kenya to test functionality and refine the interface. The UNODC East Africa Blockchain Hackathon runs until the 14th of November, and IConnect Global shall offer support to the organizing team to encourage more blockchain solutions from the region. We are proud to be a part of this revolution in our part of the world.
